👗 What to Wear for a Photoshoot: Style Tips That Look Amazing on Camera

One of the most common questions I get as a lifestyle photographer in Atlanta is:
“What should I wear for my photoshoot?”

The answer? Keep it simple, comfortable, and true to you, while choosing pieces that photograph beautifully. Whether you’re prepping for family portraits, senior prom pics, or a content shoot, the right outfit can elevate your session and help you feel confident in front of the camera.

Here’s a quick and easy guide to help you pick outfits you’ll love in your photos for years to come:

1. Keep it Timeless, Not Trendy

Trends come and go, but your photos are forever. Choose outfits that won’t feel outdated next season. Think: soft fabrics, clean lines, and colors that complement your skin tone.

Great options:

  • Neutrals (white, cream, beige, gray, taupe)

  • Earth tones (olive, rust, mustard, navy)

  • Pastels (blush, lavender, baby blue)

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match (For Groups or Families)

Matching outfits (like all white shirts and jeans) can feel dated. Instead, build a color palette and mix tones, textures, and layers within that range. For example:
Mom in a flowy cream dress, dad in a sage green button-down and tan pants, kids in soft blues or earth-toned rompers.

Create visual interest while keeping the vibe cohesive.

3. Avoid Distracting Prints & Logos

Busy patterns, logos, or words on clothing can distract from your face and the emotion in your photos. If you love a pattern, go for subtle stripes, florals, or textures that won’t take over the frame.

4. Dress for the Location & Season

If we’re shooting outdoors (which most of my sessions are), think about the scenery:

  • For parks or green spaces: muted colors or soft patterns pop beautifully against nature.

  • For city or downtown shoots: modern, structured outfits and bold accessories work well.

  • In cooler months: sweaters, boots, layers, and scarves add warmth and dimension.

5. Comfort is Confidence

If you’re tugging, adjusting, or uncomfortable in what you're wearing, it’ll show. Choose outfits that fit well, let you move freely, and make you feel amazing.

You’ll smile bigger and pose more naturally when you feel good in what you’re wearing.

6. Shoes Matter Too

Your footwear may show in more photos than you think! Choose clean, neutral shoes that fit the vibe of your outfit. For outdoor shoots, avoid heels that sink into grass or shoes that may slow you down between spots.

Pro tip: Bring comfy shoes for walking between locations!

7. Accessorize Thoughtfully

Accessories like hats, jewelry, or layers (think jackets or wraps) add personality—but don’t overdo it. Let your natural beauty shine, and use accessories to complement your outfit, not overwhelm it.

8. Plan Ahead for Hair & Makeup

Whether you go pro or DIY, soft, camera-friendly makeup and a polished hairstyle go a long way. Avoid heavy powders or SPF-heavy products that can flash white in photos.

Bonus Tip: Bring a Backup!

Especially for content or prom sessions, bring a second outfit or jacket for variety. You’ll thank yourself later when you’re flipping through your gallery.

Final Thoughts

What you wear sets the tone for your photos. Aim for confidence, comfort, and connection with the overall vibe of the session. If you’re ever unsure, send me a few outfit ideas—I’m always happy to help you pick what will look best on camera.
